This time, the volunteers from UP Manila (UPM) NSTP-LTS were the ones that conquered the center stage as they mesmerized the kids with their story-telling and acting prowess.

Inspite of the inavailability of most of the regular-special-activity-goers due to an activity in the different elementary schools within the community that day, the library was still flooded by 27 kids, all eager to discover what is in store for them. The UPM volunteers, together with the regular volunteers, did not fail the children, they awed them by their animated delivery of stories. Who would have thought that listening to stories about history and culture could be fun?!

The activity culminated with a mini-play wherein the volunteers brought to life the story of “Ang Dalawang Haring Siga” afterwhich, they sent the kids home with some surprises that cheer them even more.

Text by Kate Cagitla

Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

Schedule of Activities: MARCH to MAY

<span style="font-size: 0.9em; Two words to describe the 13th Storytelling session recently held last March 4, 2006 at the Aklatang Pambata sponsored by UP Namnama.

Kids from Brgy. Paltok lined up as early as 9 am to attend the said activity. A total of forty six Paltok kids attended the story telling session and were treated with stories that foster good morals. The stories were the following: Ang Mayabang na Isda, Ang Langgam at ang Supladong Ibon, Ang Dalawang Palaka, and Si Tikatok at Si Pikpakbum – a story of two totally different brothers who always fight each other but later on became close friends.

Aside from the storytelling, the kids had an art session wherein they learned the art of origami or the art of folding papers. They were taught to fold papers to form frogs, whales and birds. The kids clearly enjoyed the session as they enthusiastically folded the papers and played around with their new origami toys.

Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

Aklatang Pambata, a continuing joy to Paltok kids

Kids enjoying reading activities at Aklatang Pambata

After 6 months of activities and 12 weeks in dry run operations, Aklatang Pambata has served a total of 712 kids for the following kiddie-propelled endeavors:
- 12 storytelling sessions
- 2 art workshops
- 2 indigenous instrument workshops

Our volunteers to be well equipped for their tasks were given their share of training, thus:
- 4 storytelling workshops
- 1 Catch Them Early reading workshop

We deeply appreciate the support of all the facilitators and volunteers. The children were first divided into two groups by height. The first group joined the Hibla in playing the local musical instruments while the second group was taught how to write the baybayin (also known as the alibata). After an hour the two groups exchanged places.

What was very remarkable about this workshop was the collection ang merging of different musical and cultural ideas through-out the country and presenting it unified. This medium of instruction compared to the boring reading-and-discussion style of the history and culture is lot effective since it arouses the children’s interest and motivates them top think and value culture without much effort.

As an over-all assessment from a newbie in this field, the conducted workshop was successful. The emergence of this form of teaching in our educational system should be promoted.

Text by Kim Flloyd Suvilla

Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

UPDATED Schedule of Activities

FEBRUARY

4 February 2006
1st Indigenous Workshop for Kids: MUSIC/ INSTRUMENTS
Facilitator: Ms. Malou Matute
10:00 am – 12 nn

11 February 2006
2nd Indigenous Workshop for Kids: DANCE
Facilitators: Hibla
9:00 am – 12 nn

13- 17 February 2006
Aklatang Pambata Exhibit and Volunteer Recruitment
College of Engineering, UP Diliman
Whole week

19 February 2006, SUNDAY
3rd Indigenous Workshop for Kids: ART
Facilitators: UP Linya
9:00 am – 12 nn

Leadership Training for Volunteers
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
CANCELLED, PLEASE WAIT FOR FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENT

20 – 24 February 2006
Idisenyo Exhibit Featuring Aklatang Pambata and Volunteer Recruitment
AS Lobby, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, UP Diliman
Whole week

25 February 2006
Rummage Sale
Aklatang Pambata
Whole day

MARCH

4 March 2006
13th Storytelling session, THEME: History/ Culture
Facilitators: UP Namnama
9:00 am – 12 nn
Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

Appreciating Indigenous Music: A Workshop on Kalinga Instruments

Libraries function as a resource center and reading room for its visitors. With the wide array of collections, users will find countless information derived from scanning and searching books and other materials. More than this, cultivating the love of reading and promotion of literacy are critical roles that libraries play.

But for Aklatang Pambata, a library is more than a resource and reading area…

For the month of February, Aklatang Pambata features indigenous music. Last Saturday, Feb.4, a workshop on Kalinga Music and Instruments was held. This was facilitated by Ms. Malou Matute and featured different musical instruments of the Mountain Province. Children of the community, as well as the volunteers, enjoyed listening and learning indigenous Filipino music. Each child had the chance to play the tungatong, patangguk, bungkaka, tungali, kulibaw, and agong. Not only they tried playing the instruments, they were also informed of the Kalinga culture as reflected in their music. Ms. Matute explained the functions and uses of each instruments in the Kalinga community; from celebrations and social gatherings, rice planting in the terraces, relaxation and courtship, and the peace pact or bodong. Also, some differences between the northern tribe’s instruments and Mindanaoan instruments were identified.

The children actively participated in the workshop. They answered questions and eagerly waited for their turn to try each instruments. Even the small ones had fun. On the other hand, a story-telling session was also held for those who were not able to join the workshop. At the end of the session, participants were able to enjoy and appreciate indigenous Filipino music.

Going beyond the usual purpose of libraries is what also Aklatang Pambata promotes: a venue for art activities and workshops that will enhance and develop the creative minds of our children. It promotes love of learning that comes from appreciating books and other sources of information like the creative arts.

Establishing a library project supported by the community is crucial in attaining the long-term goal of the Aklatang Pambata. Organizing the community is an approach that the organization is using to arrive at a sustainable project that the community can call its own. Local leadership will be develop that will ensure the continuance of the library for the benefit of the children of the community. Thus, the Aklatang Pambata will be able to serve the children of Brgy. Paltok as an educational support and an alternative learning center.

Text: Ms. Joey Jade
Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

1st Indigenous Instruments Workshop for Kids

View the pictures of today's indigenous music workshop. Two volunteers, Miss Sunshine Cantilan of the Ateneo Grade School and Miss Anne Pasetes, a 5th year UP engineering student, enthralled 34 schoolchildren. Past storytellers for Aklatang Pambata were from Assumption College, the Assumption College Educators Society.

The art workshop held in the afternoon was made possible by volunteers from a childrens’s book illustrator group called Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan. Jomike Tejido, Jandy Carvajal and Dominic Agsaway conducted the art workshop before some 80 youngsters. Special thanks to Jovan de Ocampo and all the volunteers who have helped in the session and workshop.

The library that sprouted as a mere idea in July 2004 when the Abiad family lent their house to Edukasyon Para sa Kinabukasan, Inc., has since spawned a spirit of volunteerism. Idisenyo, UP Interior Design class, pitched in for the house makeover, opening doors for activities such as these to the community of Barangay Paltok, Quezon City. Aklatang Pambata volunteers promote reading to children and other clean and fun pastimes. The storytellers were Kuya Troy, Kuya Chad and Ate Alve. Their stories were “Ang Barumbadong Bus”, “Mariang Alimango”, and “Birthday ni Dyisus Bukas”. Invited kids were Grade 5 students of Paltok and Bayanihan Elementary Schools. After the exercise, it was suggested in a meeting that a structured storytelling be tried as an alternative procedure. Due to the huge turnover of participants, 53 kids in total, the volunteers had difficulty to contain the kids for some time. Suggestions were made on how to control efficiently the kids and one suggestion is to hold a full-blown storytelling session, details of which will be explained in the coming weeks. We have been telling three children’s stories every storytelling session. Holding the storytelling outside Aklatang Pambata was also recommended, thereby making the activity more accessible to more children. Hopefully this will encourage more volunteers for the library from the community.

Thank you very much to all the volunteers who made the storytelling session a worthwhile experience to the kids! We invited the community members in simple ceremonies wherein we emphasized that the library is theirs. It is theirs to cherish, to maintain, to patronize since it is THEIR community library. We still need volunteers who would help us raise support for the library, to man and manage the library and eventually train volunteers from the community itself. We held another storytelling session, our seventh. It was participated by 41 kids. Another day, another storytelling day, another fulfilling day.

Nice job volunteers! It is the group's request that the volunteers will continue to take part to its fruition.

Aklatang Pambata will have a test run starting November 5 and will have a formal launch this December 3.
Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

Ilustrador ng Kabataan, Alitaptap Storytellers volunteer for Aklatang Pambata

It was a busy weekend last weekend, October 15 and 16.

Interior Design Class 179 students spruced up the reading area while the Ilustrador ng Kabataan adorned the storytelling area with their mural.

Laging Pahinungod volunteers again wowed their audience with their stories. The storytelling session was held in the morning at the Paltok Barangay Hall, October 16. The storytellers were Ms. Ruby Fortun, Laya Canals, Karen Panol and Troy Lacsamana. In the afternoon, Aklatang Pambata was very fortunate to be trained by the Alitaptap, a guild of storytellers, and taught the group the basics of storytelling. The workshop was attended by 3 kids and 16 adults. It was also attended by the community and volunteers from CEFAM. In conclusion, it was a tiring but a productive week for the volunteers.

We will not falter as long as we do things from the heart.
Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

Sama na...

Another storytelling session at the Paltok Barangay Hall yesterday gave joy to 18 kids as well as to the volunteers who conducted the session. There never seemed to be a let-up of interesting stories to tickle the ribs of these youngsters. Kuya Troy started the session with his "Si Pilong Patago-tago." He was followed by Kuya Maiko's "Ang Huling Puno." It gave pleasure to the hearts of the storytellers to see the wide-eyed interest in everyone. This lasted through Kuya Niki's "Hipon and Biya." It's everybody's hope that more storytelling will follow with more hardworking volunteers. I do hope that more volunteers would join us. Storytell. :)

Aklatang Pambata recently held a storytelling training last Sunday, September 25. The workshop was facilitated by Ms. Angelu Bayani, a UP Theater Arts Major who also works in a call center. It was a mixed group of students and those who are already working, to name: Wimie Aguilar, Glenn Barbara, Christopher Magaoay, Maiko Roa, Marlon Mina, Feliciano Pimentel, Aileen Pahilanga, Kate Cagitla, Joy Hernandez and Joyce Borromeo. This is the first of a series of storytelling workshops aimed at training our volunteers who will eventually be tapped to conduct storytelling sessions in our children’s library. Heartfelt gratitude to all the participants and the organizers, Gelu, Sheila, and Chai, for volunteering their place and preparing the delicious pasta. For those who weren't able to attend, don't despair for we are arranging the next storytelling training. More than 40 kids and parents attended the storytelling. The activity started at 9:30 am with Ms. Dedette Vargas teaching the children an action song. The kids were enthusiastic participants in the exercise.
The first storyteller was Ate Joy Hernandez, a Laging Pahingunod volunteer-student. Her story was “Ang Alamat ng Palaka”, which moral is: There is a proper way to act to every situation. After that story, the children eagerly showed their parents what they learned. For example, they showed how they should act properly when in school, also how they should act when in church, while at home and while at gatherings. It was really an amusing sight to see the kid’s role-play. Kuya Chad Tan, a volunteer-UP Chemistry graduate told the next story. His story was “Carancal: Ang Bayaning Isang Dangkal.”

The activity ended with the volunteers explaining once again to the parents the objective of the exercise and enlist their support in the project. The success of the activity depended mostly on the support and cooperation of the following partners: Barangay Paltok for lending us the big venue; Paltok and Bayanihan Elementary Schools for being supportive and sending the kids to the activity; ever patient and dependable VOLUNTEERS, studying or working, old and new.

Hope to see you on the next amazing storytelling. Go Aklatang Pambata! The renovation will run for more than 6 weeks. The group needs volunteers who will assist the workers. Tasks will include clearing and cleaning the area, bringing of construction materials, painting of shelves and walls, etc. For those who wish to volunteer in the renovation, kindly coordinate with Joy Hernandez, 0927-9364589 and the Interior Design group.

Meanwhile, Laging Pahinungod met last Friday, September 9 to discuss how they can help in the renovation. Members were asked their available time during the week and committed one day a week for the duration of the renovation. The person who will be in charge of plotting the volunteer's available time is Joy Hernandez. Marketing contacts were also subdivided among the members. The program started at 2.15 pm. Kuya AJ led the opening prayer while Kuya Troy made the opening remarks. He explained to the kids what are the group's goal in setting up Aklatang Pambata in their community, that is to promote reading to the kids.

First to storytell was Nelson Capila with his piece "Mahiyaing Manok." His piece got laughs whenever he mimicked the sound of a chicken. Sierra Ma. Betan piece was "Bruhaha Bruhihi." Although it was in English, the kids were still excited to hear her story. Last but not the least, was Czarielle Guerra's piece "Ang Batang Ayaw Maligo." Just as the previous stories, it was well received. The invited storytellers are Grade V students of UP Integrated School. They won recently in this year's National Book Development Board's storytelling competition.

After the storytelling, games followed and was participated by the volunteers and the kids. Parents joined the group later and shared to everyone how this kind of activity have affected the kids. In conclusion, the kids, the parents, and volunteers went home happy, merry and inspired.

We would like to thank all the storytellers, their parents and advisers, the volunteers for making this event a memorable one for everybody. Children from Paltok community were delighted by Ate Miriam's storytelling of "Ang Madyik Silya ni Titoy" last Sunday at the Resurrection of the Lord Parish. One kid even wanted us to render storytelling everyday. You could see in the eyes of the children the excitement while the rest of us share their happiness. It started at 9 am and ended at past 1 pm. But don’t fret they had fun doing their sample storytelling, just wait when actual storytelling comes just before Aklatang Pambata opens and when it becomes fully operational this October. Thank you to Teacher Dedette, Teacher Ai and Kaypee for facilitating the training. Later in the afternoon, we attended the Paltok Barangay Session. The Barangay pledged that if they could not finance the project in whole at least they could help in part. District Councilor Bernadette Herrera also witnessed the presentation. As such, it hopes to become a haven of learning for children, a resource center for parents and teachers, and a venue for various activities (such as tutorials and storytelling sessions) that seek to promote proficiency in and enjoyment of reading.

This project is being spearheaded by Laging Pahinungod, a volunteer organization based in
University of the Philippines Diliman. The library is currently undergoing construction in Barangay Paltok, San Francisco Del Monte,Quezon City. Within the vicinity are two public elementary schools which would greatly benefit from the project’s completion.

In order to accomplish this goal, we will be needing volunteers with interest and expertise in the
following areas:

1. volunteer recruitment and management
2. marketing and fundraising
3. events planning and web development
4. module making for the tutorials
5. library management

Volunteering isn't the easiest thing you can do - but it's the most rewarding.
Enter your email address below to subscribe to Aklatang Pambata Online!

AKLATANG PAMBATA: in a nutshell

OUR VISION
To lead in the establishment, development and
improvement of community-based libraries in the country.

OUR MISSION
To make children appreciate the value of reading;
To make teachers, parents and   community members partners in promoting reading in children;
To be a model community library that can be replicated in other areas and
To make a community of readers

THE PROGRAMS

TUTORIALS for children with reading difficulties (Monday to Thursday)

STORYTELLING SESSION for children (every Friday)

CULMINATING ACTIVITY with the following themes:
Mano Po - Values
Mahuli Taya! - Sports
Kulayan Ang Mundo - Environment
Hataw Na! - Arts
Hala Bira - Culture
Sabi Ni Lola - History/Heroes
(monthly)

RESOURCE CENTER for teachers and children (Monday to Friday)

TRAININGS in conducting reading tutorials/storytelling and managing a community library for teachers, volunteers and community members
Quarterly)

THE PEOPLE
- Former volunteers of Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, a volunteer corps of the University of the Philippines
- Alumni, faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students of the University of the Philippines
- Volunteers bonded by a common belief that every one has potentials; aspires to be a better individual; and can contribute to the success of the society.

For more details, pls contact

Alistair Troy B.
